Shelter Sundy (May 3rd Edition)

Yesterday, the Tallahassee Animal Shelter hosted the 14th annual run called “Tails and Trails”. To celebrate, they’re essentially holding a sale. Adoptions are just $14 through the end of today!

Again, there are so many great dogs to adopt. Tucker and Ben (they’ve been favorites of mine for a few weeks now) are still in need of forever homes.

Shelter Sunday

I know, once upon a time I used to do “Find a Friend Friday”. However, seeing as I spend my Sundays volunteering at the shelter, it makes more sense for me to switch my days on the blog. That way my posts are as up to date as possible!

This morning, I spent another 3 hours with the dogs at the Tallahassee Leon Community Animal Services Center. (The Tallahassee Animal Shelter, for those who don’t know.) The runs are COMPLETELY full. There is no shortage of great dogs, or even dogs that fit my taste. Among my personal favorites are:
Tucker, a well trained and polite Boxer/Cattle Dog mix.
Ben, a sweet older hound dog with much more energy than you’d expect a senior to have.
Loki, a Treeing Cur mix with a fantastic name, who does great in play groups.
Beau, a “Lab/Akita” mix who looks more like a Border/Lab, which of course means I’m crazy about him. He is 6 months old, soft, and is entertained by little things, such as chasing flies.

But there are so many more! A couple of little dogs, a couple of fluffier dogs, puppies, seniors, ladies, and gentlemen – there is a dog for anyone in need.

Mabeline, an adoptable 4 year old Cur/Pit mix at the Tallahassee Animal Shelter.

Mabeline, a sweet 4 year old Cur/Pit mix, couldn’t wait for her picture to be taken! I met her in playgroup, so we know she does well with friendly dogs and people.

Tucker, an adoptable 3 year old Boxer/Cattle Dog mix. Well mannered and already trained, he is at the Tallahassee Animal Shelter.

Tucker, my black and white heartthrob. He is so polite and sweet, and has a distorted little heart on his side. 😉

Loki, a 2 year old Treeing Cur mix is available for adoption from the animal shetler in Tallahassee, FL. He is great with other dogs and people!

Loki is 2 years old and had a blast running in circles in play group today. He is stunning and so sweet!

Beau is an adoptable 6 month old Lab mix at the Tallahassee Animal Shelter.

Beau is a 6 month old typical puppy. Playful, soft, loving, and a little bit ADD. He actually reminds me a lot of Lana, and though he’s listed as a Lab/Akita, I think I see some Border Collie in that handsome mug.

I will have these photos and more uploaded to the Facebook page, and you’ll likely see a few pop up on my Pinterest and Instagram accounts, as well. I’d love to see these babies (and all the others in the shelter) find homes, so please feel free to share this page and/or my Courtesy Posts album on Facebook. Thanks for reading (and rescuing)!

Sunny’s Guest Appearance With TPA

Last weekend a local rescue called Tallahassee Pets Alive hosted an adoption event and allowed my Sunny to be their guest of honor. (Not exactly how they worded it, but I thought his title needed a little more drama.)

Tallahassee Pets Alive Adoption Event FlyerHe sat patiently in a pen for 5 hours while I awkwardly hovered like the helicopter mom I may or may not be. Okay, definitely am. He was a true gentleman, never barking, and never denying a passerby attention. Kids pet him the wrong way and he didn’t flinch. Other dogs barked and he did not respond. He ‘smiled’ for photos and gently took treats from any hand that offered. And because I brought a baggie full of cookies, there were lots of treats.

20141206_1118082While I’ll admit I was tempted to leave his side long enough to grab a cheeseburger from across the street (Burger-Fi, yum!), I’m glad I stayed because this confident side of him is something I rarely see. When Miss Lana is around her reactivity is often reflected in his actions. I’m relieved to know without her, he is fully functional. No offense to my kid.

Sunny at the adoption eventSunny shone like the star he is and I am both pleased and sad to say he has two adoption applications! I am forever grateful to Tallahassee Pets Alive for giving me to opportunity to show off my bae, and super nervous about saying goodbye. Don’t get me wrong, I have met one of the potential adopters twice, and I love the idea of her taking him home. From what I can tell, several aspects of her lifestyle are similar to mine, which makes me hope that the transition wouldn’t be too difficult for Sunny.

Sunny was chill at the eventI know he is ready to go to a real home. He has come a long way and no longer needs me to coddle him. Sunny did a great job at his first (and hopefully last) adoption event. No worries – I’ll keep you all posted with any updates!

Sunny’s Progress (And A Foster Plea)

Sunny has come a long way since he joined our little pack. Just a couple of small issues to fix and he’ll be ready for his forever home! Unfortunately, terrible lighting in my new apartment means I don’t have very many good pictures of my handsome boy, but I assure you, a photo shoot is on the to-do list.

Adoptable Golden mix, Sunny

Adoptable Golden mix, Sunny, is ready for a forever home! Through Aussie And Me Animal Rescue.

Sundance has learned a few ‘tricks’ while he’s been here. More importantly, he has learned how to be a good indoor dog. Thankfully, he came to us potty trained. Now he noses his leash when he needs to go outside, walks very nicely on leash, and knows bed time means going into his crate (which also means a treat!).

Adoptable Golden mix, Sunny

Sunny knows his crate is where he can go to rest and stay warm in these “harsh” Florida winters.

Sunny, like Lana, now sits for his food without having to be asked. He comes when called and is learning to shake ‘hands’. I am also happy to report that he lets me brush his teeth!

Adoptable Golden mix, Sunny

Sunny is a joy to foster. Easily one of my easiest fosters to date.

Sunny is mild mannered, super sweet, and between his love of food and love of his people, he is incredibly easy to train. Though I’ve never owned a Golden Retriever before, his attitude is exactly as I imagined their trademark easy-going demeanor. He would make an excellent companion for a first time owner or a low energy household. Just give him some toys and he’ll entertain himself!

Adoptable Retriever, Sunny, is tired of waiting for a forever home

Sunny is tired of waiting for his forever home! Won’t you share him so he can find his family?

So he’s pretty much perfect, right? Basically! All he needs before he can be adopted is to be neutered (already scheduled for this Tuesday) and to be de-wormed again. Easy enough!

Adoptable Retriever, Sunny is easy going and so sweet.

When he isn’t playing or begging to be petted, he is usually found napping.

So maybe you’re thinking “I should adopt this dog“. Yes! Go for it! Just fill out an adoption application on the Aussie and Me website and tell them Sundance sounds like a long lost member of your family! Or, maybe you’re thinking “Geez, what a cool dog! I can’t adopt a dog right now, but I sure wish I could temporarily have a dog like this one”. Oh boy, do I have good news for you! Sunny’s former housemate, Joe, needs a new place to go! He’s currently in a wonderful foster home, but he needs something a little… different. Both Sunny and Joe were beat up on by other dogs in their old home. Sunny and Lana get along well, but Joe is afraid of his large foster sibling. He needs a foster home with a calm, smaller dog or no dog at all. I’ve never met him, but am told he also acts like your typical Golden.

Joe, an adoptable Golden mix needs a calm foster home and some TLC

Joe must find a new foster home where he can feel safe and loved. Please share to help him find a new foster home!

Isn’t he gorgeous?! If you’re interested in helping this handsome boy blossom into his true self, please contact me or send a message to Aussie and Me either via e-mail or Facebook. He is currently in Jacksonville but I imagine he could travel a little for a good home.

What can you do to help animals? A lot, actually!

Find-A-Friend Friday – Family Edition!

Hello, all! I see you survived the week! Excellent news.

You want more excellent news? I promised my friends at the Gadsden County Humane Society that I’d feature some of their adoptable animals for this week’s Find-A-Friend Friday. And I have just the little family in mind!

Find-A-Friend Friday | Dream Big, Bark LoudlyMeet Sunshine (momma) and Ruby (baby). Aren’t they the cutest real life example of Pete and Repeat? I just adore the bottom picture – it screams ‘like mother like daughter’. Not to mention, I swear Sunshine looks like a dog I used to LOVE at daycare. I think she was a Border/Lab mix.

sunshine and pupsBut wait, there’s more! Sunshine actually has three little adoptable puppies! Mabel and Pruitt are also in foster with GCHS looking for forever homes. How precious are these dogs. It should be clear that’s why this adorable little family pulled at my heartstrings. Are they tempting you, too?

There is another special duo at the Gadsden County Humane Society that could use some good vibes this week. Axle and Sasha have been in foster for what feels like forever! They even have their own Facebook page! It sounds as though these lovely siblings would prefer a home together. Here’s what GCHS has to say about them:
“Axle and Sasha are a brother/sister duo looking for a home with no young children. They love attention and playing with other dogs but are easily scared. They need someone special that will take the time to get to know them and allow them adjust to their new home.”

This is Axle. Both he and Sasha need a forever home with a loving, easy-going, and patient family.

If you know someone in the market for some stellar siblings, or an absolutely adorable mom and pup team, please share Sunshine, Ruby, Axle, and Sasha with them! And, check out the Gadsden County Humane Society Facebook to see more adoptable animals.

Find-A-Friend Friday

If you’ve been following our Facebook page (which you really should be doing!), then you probably saw our post about SPCA Suncoast. For those who don’t know, SPCA Suncoast is a shelter close to home. I actually attended one of their events for one of my old employers (Camp K9 in Trinity, Florida). But, they are also a shelter struggling for money.

Yes, all shelters and rescues are struggling for money. But this one is on the verge of having to close their doors. There already aren’t that many shelters in the area. Some of those that are nearby have suffered from freak accidents (a tornado hit one pretty hard), parvo outbreaks, and really bad press. Like, really bad. A certain unnamed shelter is working on completely changing who is in charge. Which really, that same unnamed shelter should have gladly accepted me as a volunteer when I offered, but that’s their loss.

Anyway, I’m trying to do my part by choosing animals from SPCA Suncoast for this week’s Find-A-Friend Friday. Which, unfortunately is a little bit difficult. Mostly because their Facebook, website, and Petango account are not all on the same page. (I’m assuming they’re a little focused on finances right now rather than social media – fair enough I suppose.) Therefore, I’m not actually positive which animals are up for adoption and which were up for adoption. For this, I apologize. Please consider that your warning. There are animals in need of homes at this shelter. Maybe this dog and this cat! (But, any other week a dog or cat I feature could theoretically get adopted 3 seconds after I click “publish post”; it’s not so very different, right?)

This week’s dog is known as Lip. He is a beautiful, young (about 1 year old) Red Heeler. His ID number is 22114851.

Find-A-Friend Friday | Dream Big, Bark Loudly

The cat of the week is Crybaby. Her ID number is: 22136761. She is spayed and not declawed. They estimate that she is less than 6 months old.

Find-A-Friend Friday | Dream Big, Bark LoudlyIf you would like to support the SPCA Suncoast from far away, they have a donation link here. They will also have a truck where Tampa/Odessa/Lutz/New Port Richey locals can drop off donations. For more information, the Facebook event is here.

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your upcoming weekend!
